On Sunday evening the team where contacted by Wasdale MRT with a request for the possible need of our hydraulic lifting and rock breaking equipment. You might not expect a helicopter to be high on the list for underground rescue. However, we carry a huge amount of specialist, often heavy, kit and it could benefit a casualty to have it urgently transported high into the hills. So on friday we visited the HM Coastguard helicopter based at Carlisle for the summer to show them our kit, how it is packaged and discuss some of the hazards associated with it. By discussing this ahead of time both we and they can be better prepared. In three weeks, Sally, a COMRU team member for almost 15 years and current team treasurer, will be setting off on a 220 mile solo hike across Scotland to help raise funds for COMRU. The aim is to be able to upgrade some of our older Petzl I'D Decenders to some new Petzl Maestro Decenders. Last weekend the team met up at Honister Slate Mine for our April training. The day started with a tour of the mine workings where we were able to gain a better understanding of the manner and scale of the workings and see the working face of the mine. After our tour the training moved on to a casualty care session, with the focus being casualty packaging, in particular for those who have hypothermia. After lunch we had the opportunity to explore some of the older mine workings, away from the working mine and visitor attraction. This was a great opportunity to practice using our underground search techniques. COMRU would like to thank Honister Slate Mine for welcoming us, the fantastic tour and the use of their extensive mine workings.
